Tom's Training Philosophy
Every individual must properly train their body utilizing the science of fitness training. The key words here are science and individual. There is an overabundance of information regarding fitness training with each system guaranteeing success if you just follow a particular and all encompassing program. Trade publications (i.e. magazines, books) offer more anecdotal information which, in some cases, can be utilized successfully IF one is familiar with the science of training. Anyone can copy a program from a magazine or book. While this may be beneficial, it does not ensure success for any client unless the program is specifically designed for achieving their individual goals. Success can only truly be attained if the trainer can skillfully plan a program that is designed specifically for the individual being trained. This requires adhering to basic scientific principles as well as understanding how the body adapts to stress. This data then directs the personal trainer to truly develop a scientifically based program. Using this data, along with the scientific rationale behind program design, can be tricky; nevertheless, using the concept of scientific program design will guide the trainer and client to achieving success.
You don’t need expensive training equipment or gym memberships to achieve a high level of success in your health and fitness goals, whether that be general fitness or elite level performance. Having a well designed program with the correct progressions, dipped with some good old-fashioned dedication is all that is required. I have spent a lot of time either deployed while in the military or in hotels once out of the military. I was able to maintain my high level of fitness and martial arts effectiveness without the aid of gym memberships. I find creative and innovative workouts much more challenging and fun. Gyms are a great tool. Just remember they are only one of your options in your tool bag for acheiving the results you are seeking.
How I Got Started in Fitness and Nutrition
Personal training for me started in the military where I began helping fellow soldiers increase their PFT scores, weight management, fitness maintenance while deployed, and special events, such as powerlifting tournments and 10ks. I ran remedial and unit level fitness programs. In my spare time I would do personal training at the post gym. After getting out of the military I continued to train a variety of clientele for a wide range of sports and health reasons.
The only reason I got involved in training others was simply that I enjoyed it and people valued my advise. I was mostly there for my own training but often found myself giving a class or having numerous people tag along for my workouts. And so it just grew from there.
Now I work primarily with Combat Sports Fighters i.e. MMA, boxers, etc. and individuals such as yourself.
The truth is everyone of us was built to be an elite athlete. The majority of us just don't use our bodies in the manner in which it was designed to function. Physical fitness and nutritional support are two key elements needed to lead a long life of good health and productivity.
